CHAPTER 17
We didnât want to miss him, so we were earlyâvery early. Bettina had dragged me out of the house at the crack of dawn (it felt like), but still our departure occurred after Vaughn had left for the station. The man was pulling triple overtime hunting down all the most minuscule leads related to Kyle Briscoeâs murder. He was also anxious to get the beer test results and coordinate a search of the brewery property.
All of which led to my being hunkered behind the wheel of a pearl-white Cadillac in the hospital parking garage. Thatâs the problem with the hospitals in Portlandâtheyâre in the middle of the city, so their parking tends to be of the stacked, multistory variety which tends not to provide a good vantage point and definitely rules out the possibility of a quick getaway.
My view was of a concrete pillar that had 4B painted in a reflective yellow on it, presumably to help people remember where theyâd stashed their vehicles. I had my cell phone on speaker, and Bettina was calling every ten minutes with updates about nothing.
Since Dorsay knew what I look like, and had possibly seen my Jeep at some point during my comings and goings for our meetings, weâd decided that Bettina and her vehicle should be the public faces for our operation. Bettina was camped out in the hospital entrance lobby because we needed the earliest possible warning to even have a shot at success. She was equipped with my very best detailed description of the man we wanted to tail.
From her frequent reports sheâd already exhausted the supply of ancient and germ-encrusted reading material scattered over the low tables in the waiting area. I was at the ready in her Caddy, trying to stave off boredom of my own.
Our assumptions were that either Jock Dorsay had a friend who would pick him up or else heâd be requiring a form of taxi service to get home. I wasnât sure Dorsay was the type of man who had close friends, Kyle Briscoe notwithstanding (and look how thatâd turned out), so we were betting on a for-hire car, all of which came and went from the patient loading zone at the hospitalâs main entrance.
Bettina was perfectly poised for spying Dorsay departing; she just wasnât very patient. I was using the time to do some more research on the real patient with my laptop.
Jock Dorsay was a man of mystery. The building on Lovejoy Street was really the only entity tied to him that was readily available in public records. I couldnât find the location of his private residence for anything. Given his hibernation tendencies and the renovations Olga had hinted at, I was beginning to wonder if he actually lived somewhere deep in the bowels of the Lovejoy building in a sort of ultimate live-work situation. Maybe with another decade of gentrification, his loft (or whatever it might be) would be worth a small fortune. I wouldâve liked to see the blueprints for that buildingâboth original and more recent.
